Investing in a green future

Dedicated to contributing to a sustainable future for the screen-based industries, Pinewood Group is committed to leading the way in building and operating sustainable production space.

Preserving our environment for future generations

Pinewood works with partners such as BAFTA, Film London and the BFI to increase sustainability, environmental awareness and reduce waste, as well as assisting productions with achieving ALBERT certification.

Preserving our local environment and our planet is very important to us, so we take many steps across our sites to protect, preserve, sustain and conserve for future generations.
Our new studio facilities are leading the way, by being sympathetic to our environment, winning an Award in 2019 from the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management.

The creation of wildlife habitats on otherwise barren rooftops, has shown that a sensitive and ambitious building strategy can lead to real benefits for people and nature. The introduction of grass roofs on nine new film stages not only recreates the meadows lost to the footprint of the new development, but has recreated suitable habitats for Skylarks to nest, feed and raise their young. The green roofs were also an opportunity to benefit many other species of wildlife and invertebrates, especially pollinating insects such as solitary bees, butterflies, hoverflies, predatory wasps and beetles.

  • 4.3 hectares of new species rich meadows
  • 1.5 hectares of new native woodlands
  • 28,000 (approx.) trees and shrubs planted
  • 16 hibernacula’s
  • 11 bat boxes
  • 1 reptile underpass

INVESTING IN RENEWABLE ENERGY AND TECHNOLOGY

Energy is important to everyone at the studio, from lighting sets to heating offices, everyone uses energy each day. As a studio, we consistently monitor our energy use and try to use it as sustainably as possible, reducing our consumption, changing our behaviours and taking advantage of new technology and alternative sources such as LED lighting and solar panels.

100% of electricity sourced by the Studio is purchased from renewable sources.

We also encourage everyone working on our sites to conserve energy wherever possible by:

  • Turning off lights when they leave
  • Powering down electrical equipment that doesn’t need to be on
  • Shutting windows whilst air conditioning is in operation

STAGING GREENER JOURNEYS

Sustainable travel is better for the environment and for our roads and Pinewood promotes the use of sustainable modes of transport to and from the studios for visitors, staff and clients.

SHUTTLE BUSES

We encourage staff, clients, visitors, production employees and local residents to make use of the shuttle bus service to and from local train and underground stations. The service is completely free to use and at peak times, provides a service up to every 10 minutes.

This not only helps reduce CO2 emissions, it also helps ease congestion in the local area and improve the local air quality by replacing cars. Pinewood also supports local schools with use of the shuttle buses for school trips.
This one initiative takes over 100,000 car journeys off the road each year.

In addition, the travel plan provides:

  • A new shared footpath and cycleway outside Pinewood Studios
  • Electric vehicle charging points at Pinewood and Shepperton Studios
  • Electric vehicles and bikes used on site by Pinewood maintenance and ground staff
  • Bi-annual bike services for those that travel to work by bike
