PINEWOOD’S EARTH WEEK

It’s no secret that the film industry is a very energy and waste intensive business. So, what is Pinewood Studios doing to lessen negative environmental impacts?

Saturday 22nd April 2017 is Earth Day; a day that has been celebrated since 1970 and aims to raise environmental awareness and encourage sustainability. Pinewood’s Environmental Team would like to take this opportunity to promote sustainability and get you up to speed on what Pinewood is doing to lessen its environmental impact throughout the week leading up to Earth Day.

London is the 3rd busiest film production centre in the world, after Los Angeles and New York. It is estimated that London’s screen production equates to around 125,000 tonnes of CO2 every year- excluding travel!*

The news is full of reports on how Climate Change is taking effect; 2016 was the hottest year on record, the rate of species extinction is unprecedented and forests are being cut down at a rate of an acre every second. There is pressure on businesses now more than ever to take actions to be more sustainable and combat the effects of Climate Change.

There are many reasons why Pinewood Studios is active in its endeavours to be more sustainable; to lessen its impact on the environment, to be corporately responsible and also to meet the growing expectations of our clients.  Sustainability is fast becoming of keen interest to many huge names in the film industry.

Leonardo DiCaprio is known globally for his ground-breaking films such as Titanic, The Wolf of Wall Street and Inception, but in 2014 he was also named the UN Messenger of Peace. Since then DiCaprio has used his fame to raise the profile of Climate Change and has executive produced some astounding documentaries including Cowspiracy and Before the Flood. Both are available on Netflix and are strongly recommended by Pinewood Environmental Team.

“I believe humankind has looked at Climate Change in the same way: as if it were a fiction, happening to someone else’s planet, as if pretending that Climate Change wasn’t real would somehow make it go away.” – Leonardo DiCaprio

“Because we’ve waited, because we’ve turned our backs on nature’s warning signs and because our political and corporate leaders have consistently ignored the overwhelming scientific evidence, the challenges we face are much more difficult. Much of this vision is complicated- but that’s inevitable.” – Leonardo DiCaprio

We would like to encourage you to take the time to engage in these environmental updates this week and reflect on what steps you can take at work and at home to make a difference. Our environmental updates will be focusing on Pinewood’s zero waste to landfill policy, our sustainable travel initiatives and energy.
