Shepperton Studios’ plans for expansion have been supported by the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, clearing the way for planning permission to be issued.
Spelthorne Borough Council resolved to grant outline planning permission for the improvement and expansion of the world-renowned Shepperton Studios site in Surrey, England in February 2019. The Secretary of State has now considered the case and returned the application to Spelthorne Borough Council to formally grant the planning permission.
This decision will allow the progression of Pinewood Group’s plans to invest in and expand the world-class facility, increasing capacity for film and high-end television production in the UK. It is expected that the development project will result in a £300 million annual boost to the UK economy.
In response to the Secretary of State decision, Andrew Smith, Corporate Affairs Director of Pinewood Group Limited, said:
“We are delighted with the Secretary of State’s decision, which will allow us to progress with the expansion plans without delay. As we move forwards with the proposals we will continue to work with Spelthorne Borough Council on the details of the scheme.”
The plans will see the development of new studio space, which will include sound stages, offices, workshops, backlots, car parking and additional infrastructure.
The UK film industry is expected to create around 10,000 skilled jobs over the next five years and the expansion of Shepperton Studios will be a key contributor securing a number of job opportunities, including 1,500 construction jobs and a further 3,000 jobs at the Studios upon its completion.
